Default Question regarding Vanilla plainiflora

My Vanilla recently outgrew her small trellis, became top heavy, and toppled from her perch. While repotting her I noticed that she is only growing one lengthy stem and has never branched. Is this normal. I'd like to give my daughter a cutting. Would it be harmful to take a tip cutting or would this actually encourage the plant to branch out in different directions?

Since my Vanilla is in the same condition, I am looking forward to hearing the answer to your question. Carol

Cut the tip! If you don't want to cut it you can cover it by a small black bag to block light. Hormone will move to other place to form new branches. Good luck. Cheers.

Thank you for responding. That's interesting. So either way, cutting or covering, should induce new branches?

Yes, That's it. Not only for Vanilla but also for other plants: tomato, pepper, etc...
