Well, I finally got my first homegrown hybrid to bloom.

I transferred this plant into a small pot from the tree it germinated in about a year ago if memory serves. And now that it bloomed. I'm pretty sure it's the result of a cross I made between Epidendrum schumannianum and Epidendrum wallisii with E. wallisi producing the seed.

It's flower is closer in size to the smaller E. schumannianum, though a bit bigger. It looks very similar to E. Costa Rica on Orchid Roots that is the same cross but with the parents switched.

Sadly 3 of the 4 flower buds got chewed up by a caterpillar the day before opening. Luckily I caught it in the act before it got to the final one. Otherwise I might not have known what sort of plant it was for another year.
Though if it takes after E. wallisii it'll bloom throughout the year. E. schumannianum only blooms during a 2 month window (July/August) as far as I can tell.

As I'm not 100% sure of it's parentage, I'd be hesitant to register anything. Just happy to finally have got a proof of concept that ex-vitro germination of hybrids is possible.
Now I'm curious to see if it's growth habit is like. Will it only bloom from the end of a stem like schumannianum or will it get flowers at internodes in the stem like wallisii? I'm kind of hoping it gets the robustness of schumannianum with the floriferousness of wallisii.

Default A second plant got it's first bloom this week.

A second plant of this cross that germinated in an orange tree at least 3 years ago finally got it's first bloom.

This one has grown in the same spot it germinated. I like the flowers on this one a bit better as they are slightly larger and the petals and sepals have a more orangish color.
I've had a lot of different species of Epidendrum blooming in the last month and made a ton of crosses. Really looking forward to more unique flowers.
