Humidity dome for deflasked Clowesia seedlings or no? Female
Default Humidity dome for deflasked Clowesia seedlings or no?

Good morning orchid friends, I've recently bought a flask of Clowesia glaucoglossa seedlings! Before doing so I have done the necessary research and bought the supplies I need to ensure I can grow them properly. I've read on Fred Clarke's "De‐flasking the genus Catasetinae" PDF that he recommends a RH level of 50%-80% for deflasked seedlings. As far as I know, where I live (San Antonio TX) has humidity levels around that point throughout the day, at least outdoors. I have yet to get a humidity dome, though there are places locally I can get one, but I wanted to ask first if it was even necessary. I am thinking that if I grow the seedlings near the rest of my plants, just with indirect light, the nearby humidity combined with the moistness of the sphagnum they grow in may be enough. What do you all think? I really don't want anything to rot. Thanks

I know this is an old thread that unfortunately got no responses. My first flask was a Clowesia glaucoglossa as well, from LA Orchid John, which is where I assume you got yours. I was basically experimenting in the dark and also due to some neglect I let a lot of the seedlings die when they didn't have to.

This is probably not as useful to OP, but for anyone that's interested, I did deflask into a seedling tray with little plastic pots that resemble an egg carton, with a humidity dome with a couple of those tabs that could be opened to reduce moisture. Too much humidity causes rot or mold, so be careful to leave them open at start and adjust to keep it humid without too much condensation.

My mistake was that I was in too much of a rush to get them out into their own pots, and also didn't monitor them as closely as I should have when summer rolled around and they started drying out faster. I could have probably just kept them in the domed trays for a year and just sprayed to water when necessary.

I have no idea what the ideal culture would be, but if I had kept them in the dome without getting impatient and moving them around, more would have survived. Maybe using the domes is not necessary if you pay a lot more attention to it.

I don't recall seeing this post. Kim (Fairorchids) has an extensive post on deflasking.

My only thought is that itzi should buy a cheapo temperature and humidity gauge.
The Thermopro from amazon is 7.99 and seems to be accurate.
Humidity can be very different from inside house to outside and even vary from room to room.
