Can I Propagate This?
Default Can I Propagate This?

I received a shipment today from Kaleialoha Orchid Farm and I couldn't be more happy with what I received. All 4 plants exceeded my expectations. Two were in spike and one was flowering unexpectedly.

LC Rustic Spots
Iwanagara Apple Blossom 'Kalei Pink'
Cischwenfia pusilla
Dendrobium parishii

The order was probably the best packed plant order I have ever received. Somehow despite this, a cane from the Den Parishii fell off (or was thrown in extra). Here is a picture, can I propagate this? If so, tips are welcome

Thanks!!

sure, at least try some back bulb culture..

id put it in a shallow dish full of sphagnum moss and keep it moist but not wet....i do this is with a lot of old canes that either fall off or get bumped...i cut mine into two or three bract sections....and they often will either send out roots or ne growth.

there might be other ways too...dip it in rooting compound and stick it in perlite?

id look up "back bulb culture" and start there

This time of year, that Den. parishii is pretty much dormant. You can just put the end that was attached to the mother plant in some damp sphagnum (or tie it to a mount with a bit of sphagnum) and mist it occasionally. In spring, I think you'll very likely see a new green shoot, and some root action. For now it will pretty much just sit there doing nothing, so be patient.

Another option is a plastic cup containing ordinary, horticultural perlite. Nestle the base of the pseudobulb about an inch into the perlite, add water to the cup so it is about two inches below the top of the perlite.

The perlite will wick up the water around the plant while remaining airy, but being inorganic, will not support fungal growth.
