Miami Valley Orchid Society (Dayton, Ohio)

I hope I'm posting this in the right part of the forum. I'm not really announcing this show but, rather, asking a couple questions about it.

I can find the date, time, and location for this show, which is happening this weekend, February 16 & 17, but I cannot find any other information. I'd really like to know what vendors will be there, are there any talks being given, etc.?

It's a three-hour drive each way for me, and I don't really mind that. It will get me out of the house, which I could really use this winter! But I'd really like to know if there will be a good selection of sales tables there, as possibly purchasing something would be one of my big reasons for going. Anybody out there that has been to it or is a member of the Miami Valley Orchid Society who can steer me to a specific event schedule or otherwise provide information on whether this would be worth the drive? Thanks!

Cheri - I go almost every year and I can tell you that it has always been a very good orchid show. LOTS of vendors and lots and lots of plants to choose from. I have never been disappointed! It's not as big as some of the shows, like Pittsburgh or Ann Arbor...but it's one of the bigger ones for central Ohio.

Tip - try to get there as close to opening on Saturday as you can because it's usually packed and the best stuff goes early. And I do mean packed...it's typically elbow to elbow w/other orchid buyers.

Cheri, I don't know where you are in MI. However, Hauserman's open house is the 1st two weekends if March. Is that more than 3 hrs from you?

Katrina, thanks for that information. I knew we had to have some members here from Ohio who have attended before.

Carol, I am definitely thinking about the Hauserman's open house. It would be around four hours one way. I think for that one, I would stay overnight and make it a two-day trip. I will be keeping an eye on the weather forecasts as it gets closer, as well as a couple things going on with my schedule that I may not have any control over.

Hauserman's definitely has a lot of nice plants on their website that I would be very interested in. If it wasn't the middle of winter, I'd be ordering a few things from them.

You'd be traveling within a mile of my house...

Right now, the Hauserman's trip is really up in the air for me, but if I do go, I'll PM you and maybe we can figure out a way to meet over there. That would be really nice! I also have the option of a person in my local society who I know is going, and she has offered to pick up plants for me if I want her to. So I'm just not sure yet what I'll do......

I believe Hauserman's will be at the Michigan Orchid Society's show in March. They have come previous years, but I don't see the vendor lists posted for this year's show. If they are coming, they accept preorders for plants and they will bring them to the show for you.

Ah, thank you for that info, nikkik! I go to that show every year, and I honestly can't remember them being there, but that doesn't mean they weren't. I do remember one vendor in particular with a very large display. Maybe that was them. I think I'll call them later today to find out for sure.

Addendum: Yes, that is them! I just got off the phone with them, and the MOS show, which I believe is March 30 and 31 this year, is the only one in Michigan or Ohio that they attend. So, looking back, I'm pretty sure of which vendor display was theirs. I just wasn't remembering the name. And they do take special orders which they will bring to the show for delivery.

Just a follow-up. I went to this show today. It's a nice show and it continues through tomorrow, in case anyone is nearby and thinking of going. The Cox Arboretum is a lovely location. I've not been to a huge number of orchid shows, but I guess I would categorize this one as medium-sized? There were probably around six different vendors there, though I didn't count.

In keeping with my resolution to buy only smaller orchids, I ended up with a Sedirea japonica that is blooming size and a Phal. (Katie Morris 'Burnished Copper' HCC/AOS x equestris) with a spike of about an inch and a half.
