Catasetums happy sap ?
3 Attachment(s)
So I see the post below me , where the guy has really yellow leaves along with the sap on his plant but my leaves seem to be green and there’s little drops of sap here and there it seems to be a running theme for ctsm or fdk and was wondering if anyone had input ?
They seem super vigorous otherwise Fred Clarke responded with it is normal and stops when the plants mature and just to give the leaves a rinse with every watering to remove the potential for attracting pests Just thought this would be good clarification for those people having the concern |
i've stumbled upon two youtube videos today which said that the Cycnodes Wine Delight (which is what i have) tends to be sticker than other catasetums.
one of them was this: CATASETUM ORCHID UPDATE: BIG BULBS AND NEW FLOWER SPIKES/AN AFTERNOON IN THE GREENHOUSE PT3 - YouTube other was by Miss Orchid Girl (don't remember which video) |
Many ctsm do get the sticky sap on their leaves...especially in low humidity. Be sure to give the leaves a good rinse off frequently because a build up of the sap can result in a black sooty mold type issue which makes the leaves very ugly, long before they naturally start to get ugly.
In general, I have found that the thinner the leaves, the more potential for this type of sap.. as well as the greater the chance of spider mites. As a side note..rinsing the leaves often also helps to deter spider mites. When my plants are outside, the leaves get sprayed daily either by me or mother nature. When they are inside for the fall, I take them to the shower at least once a week and spray the leaves well. The falls when I've been lazy about showering were also the times when I had the worst trouble with spider mites. |
