I was there bright and early on opening day:biggrin: and it was awesome. If you're in the area, stop by. If not, check out the video I put together. Let me know what you think and maybe I'll see you there! You know, because I might have to go again. :)

Glad you enjoyed the video. :D Such a great show. I think it's the most orchids they ever had in the 16yrs of the show.

Thanks for all the work. It is well worth the time. The little girl taking the pictures that looked no more than 5 was killing me.

ha. that's my daughter. you're spot on, she's 5yrs old. she likes photographing plants and orchids also. I wonder where she got that from...:hmm:biggrin:

Well she is a cutie. It always makes me so surprised how these young kids can work all the technology. I so have trouble with it. Well I know they are growing up with it but she just seemed so young to be doing it. Thanks again.

Great video! I went to the NYBG this past weekend and as usual, the show was good.

But I actually did not think it was as good as prior years. I think one of my favorites has been the Thailand one last year (or the year before that?) I was not a fan of the installation with the piping. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

kids these days are growing up with facial recognition and movies on a telephone. It's amazing. she was teaching me how to use snapchat. I still don't know how to use it. lol.

she does seem good with the camera though. Her pics are better than some people i know. i actually just started to show her rule of 3rds with the grid.

well, thanks for looking at the video and compliment of my daughter. by the way, she has her 1st orchid, and it's in water culture.

thanks meraki.

was it crowded? I want to go again soon, maybe this weekend. I went twice last year. first day, and toward the end. toward the end was not enjoyable at all. too many people and the line wrapped around outside.

I initially thought the same as you. And still do, come to think of it. I mean those elephants and temple from last year was hard to beat. But this years was still pretty awesome. I was amazed more with the amount of orchids. And toward the end, the type of orchids that were displayed. They seemed to have some very nice mature specimens. If you looked at the individual kokedamas, they had some really cool orchids i've never seen. Even some of the ones planted in the ground were pretty impressive. The dendrobium Roy Tokunaga toward the end was like 1.5ft wide. I have some posted on my IG, and about to post more.

Too bad they don't sell the orchids after at discount. I would love to pic up a couple of those guys.

here's a link to my IG if interested to see some of the orchids. Cheers.

We went soon after it opened so it was still pretty empty. I will most likely go again, probably by myself so I can enjoy more fully and not feel like I'm boring the people I'm with with my endless admiration.

While I didn't think the installation/art piece was that inspiring, the amount of orchids and the variety was pretty great. I think this is the most vandas they've had in recent memory. In the room right before the final piece-de-resistance, it was almost all vandas, I was very impressed.

My biggest gripe with NYBG is that they don't sell the plants after. While it's nice that they donate them to nearby senior centers and hospitals, I would gladly pay full price for some of them. Gotta stalk where they donate them to, maybe I can buy one off the senior center ;) I've bought my fair share of plants from their gift shop though, they are sort of reasonably priced. Most are under $40, which is about the same as buying from an online retailer with shipping.

I completely agree with you in regards to the art piece. However, i did like the bamboo toward the end.

I was actually going to mention the vandas toward the end. They were beautiful. they had a lot of cool orchids, but you had to take your time and look.

i bought a couple orchis from the gift shop last year, and if you get the more rare ones, then i guess it's worth it for the price to avoid the cost of shipping. But sometimes you can get lucky and TJ's and save $20. I held off from buying this time. Although there are some Paphs that I might walk home with if i go again. I did my first orchid mail order and it wasn't bad at all, I just bought a bunch since there was a cap on the shipping. and since it was out of state, no tax. So it evened out to buying at a local store.

I thought the same in regards to going by myself. I had family with me and i could've stayed at least another 1.5hrs. Especially since i like to take photos and video. They weren't rushing me, i just felt like I was boring:yawn: them. After the fountain is where you can really take time and look at the different orchids.

well good luck if you go again. Perhaps we'll bump into each other. cheers.
