whats your favorite method of killing grasshoppers?

I found another in my greenhouse this morning, I hauled everything outside and shook it, sprayed the heck out of the walls and tables, used 3-1 bayer spray, and waited...couldn't find him, though I found some nibbles...nothing major....hauled everything back...

and, on the very last plant I repotted as it tipped, I found that booger!! under the leaf....so I gently moved him outside, knocked him off and SQUISHED him!!!

HOORAY!

so, does anyone else have a remedy for them...I don't think any insecticide kills them.....

I seem to remember using bait during grasshopper infestations a few years back. That wouldn't bother your orchids, at least, sprinkled around the greenhouse.

bait sounds good, but my kitties go in there sometimes....I am afraid it might be harmful to them....

Try spreading some diatomaceous earth around where you see the grasshoppers. It'll kill them. I'd also suggest a really good, POTENT insecticide.

Try Sevin. It is ground zero for everything but spidermite. Keep the kitties out of there until it has been completely washed off, though, just to make certain the kitties are not harmed. There is also the systemic, Bonide's insect killer. I would not allow the kitties eat the plants, though. Link:

More organic for the sake of the kitties:
Neem oil. It is safe for all the critters and supposedly kills the insects.
As said, DE. Get the food grade, though, as anything else could be harmful to you and the kitties.

I think it might be too late to get praying mantis cases. I bought them in the spring, along with the lacewings and lady bugs. They have all done a fantastic job getting rid of my issues. My plants look good and I see the occasional lady bug and lacewing larvae. I saw a preying mantis in the yard the other day so they are helping out, too.

Hello DuoNo, How many grasshoppers are there? Do you think there are just a few that wandered in, or are they setting up housekeeping? I get a few outdoors, birds gleefully hunt them, and my dogs will catch and eat them. If your cat doesn't hunt, you might try to get a real barn cat to adapt to the greenhouse. I think the old-time Mormons had some divine help from seagulls, but I'm not sure how that would work out in a greenhouse.

Seriously, if you have to poison them, look into Nolo bait. It won't be toxic to the cat, but may be most effective if used in the spring with the new hatch.

I had fried grasshoppers in Oaxaca. They had no taste, only crunch. Like eating fried shrimp tails, antennae, legs and shells.

Grasshoppers will hop on your flowers and can destroy or not can not let them properly grow. One should take proper measures to protect their plants.
