Miniature cymbidiums in ceramic pots??
 

I have several miniature cymbidiums that I would like to transplant into some ceramic pots. The pots are heavy and strong plus they have openings in them for air. Would this be a good idea or should I just stay just stay with clay pots?

A clay pot is a ceramic pot... I presume you mean a glazed ceramic pot.

As long as you're willing to compensate for the relatively minor differences in in-pot conditions through an adjustment in watering schedule or potting medium, the plants shouldn't have any issues whatsoever.

Thanks so much. I love the pots and the fact that they are heavy will keep plant from tipping. I had 2 beautiful spikes on a chartreuse cymbidium this early spring and no bud blasts which happens to me sometimes and it is heart breaking.

Losing flowers after waiting a year for an orchid to bloom is definitely disappointing. I am glad that you had success this year. :)

As I do too. Sometimes I just can't provide enough light especially during winter and other times I over water but the there are times that we are out of town at a crucial point in the bud opening and end up with a blast...so very upsetting. I guess no one said it would be easy.

I do not recommend potting directly into glazed ceramic pots as it usually will result after several years, of having to break the pot to remove the plant. You will also need to be sure the pot has drainage.

I prefer to use the ceramic pot as a "cachepot" meaning an outer pot. Purchase a ceramic pot (with drainage) large enough to hold your plant which is probably in a plastic pot. Elevate the plant a bit with rocks or pots so the top of the pot sits at the same height as the cache pot. This hides the plastic pot, gives a charming appearance, saves the ceramic pot from destruction on repotting and can be reused for the same plant again after it is divided.
