Just got home from the Ann Arbor Orchid Festival. So glad I went and it will be an annual trip for sure! The monster cymbidium (tag was missing but the vendor will be emailing it to me this week) was picked out by my wife, yes the wife that said no more orchids :D . The cattleya (C. lueddemanniana var. tipo 'Hayde' AM/SVCN x 'Sian #2') has a very sweet, almost clean soap like scent that's quite strong. Couldn't leave without an oncidium type, bought a Bllra. Big Shot 'Hilo Sparkle'. Also quite fragrant. Will post pics of the displays in the orchid show thread in a while. Any tips on cymbidiums would be greatly appreciated as this is my 1st. Will be doing lots of research but will love any personal experiences/knowledge. My orchids are grown indoors 95% of the time, temps never over 72 degrees, rarely below 68, whole house humidifier kept at 50%.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3404523de4.jpg

Wow, a nice variety, all beautiful! I'm glad you enjoyed the show. I can't wait to go tomorrow. That cymbidium is huge. It's nice that your wife was the one to choose that one!

Gorgeous, although the Cimbidium is more of an outside plant. You may look into that.

About the Cymbidium, you can certainly grow them well in this area. We have a member who grows gorgeous Cymbidiums (all in hydroponics!). She keeps them outside during the summer until close to frost and then brings them inside.

Cymbidiums need to be outside as long as possible and in climates where there is little danger of frost/freeze, they are kept outside all year. They need light brighter and more air movement than they will receive indoors. They also benefit from the drop in temperatures to encourage bloom from living outside. If you can do this, your plant may bloom again for you, but it will take a little more doing than your other plants, which are more acclimated to indoor conditions, as long as you can give them adequate light and humidity.

I find it interesting that you give the name of the Catt and the Onc. but the poor Cym. goes without. It should have a name too. I suspect it is a standard which may be more difficult to rebloom under your conditions. There has been hybridizing done in the area of the warmth/heat tolerant Cyms, which are more house friendly, do not need the 20 degree temp drop to bloom and are smaller in size.

That looks like a very nice haul. I suspect you'll want to find the coolest area in your house for the Cymbidium. Happy growing!
