I received this blc Hawaii Star last month. When I went to water it , I found the bract turning brown. I know it is probably too late to save the bloom, but can anyone help me with why this happened and what I can do?

Some Cattleya alliance plants bloom through green sheaths, others bloom after the sheath turns brown. Either way, there is not anything you can do except wait and see what happens.

OK, thank you, I didn't realize that they might turn brown before blooming. I have two other cattleya and one has sheaths but are green, and the other hasn't matured enough as I bought it as a baby. I learn so much from this
board. Again, thank you.

That is not a "bract" or sheath that's browning, it's the leaf of the plant having an infection, and dying. Cut it off just above the pseudobulb, dust the wound with cinnamon powder, and if you're lucky the infection will stop progressing.

You're right, I looked at it closely and it is a leaf rolled up really tight. I will cut it off and dust it with cinnamon. Thank you, Ray.

When I first read this post I was in a location where photos could not download to my mobile (WiFi on mass transit). I assumed we were talking about a bud sheath. My apologies if I mislead.

Ray is right - that is a leaf dying, and should be cut off.
