2 x Cattleya amethystoglossa

Over the past couple of weeks, we have bloomed two Cattleya amethystoglossas.

The first belongs to my cotenant, Kyle. He purchased his plant as a standard 2N, but to his surprise it turned out to be a variety aureum. This variety opens with flowers having a pale creamy yellow background, and they mature into a rich bold yellow color.

The second is mine. It is a 4N, which is blooming for the 3rd time this year with 2 spikes, carrying 8 & 12 flowers respectively.

Very nice! I had a seedling and killed it. How large are your plants? Would like to try again but they are big aren't they?

Both of these plants are about 18-20" tall, in clay pots that makes them well over 2' tall (when not in flower). I have heard about plants growing closer to 30" tall, so fortunately both of our plants are 'compact'.

Both are beautiful! Too big for my space but I always love seeing the species.

These should be crossed.

I think that Kyle kept pollen from the Aureum. However:

1. I believe it is a recessive trait, so it won't show in the next generation.
2. Since the Aureum is 2N, and 'Akhtar' is 4N, it would produce all sterile 3N offspring.

BTW, 'Akhtar' got an 82 pt AM/AOS today.

3N tend to grow really well and make great plants for people who aren't interested in breeding.

Congratulations on the award!

Wow! Congrats on the AM/AOS!!

Well deserved!!
