Betadine for de-flasking?
:waving Hi!
I was watching some Thai videos about orchids and came across one which was showing how to de-flask orchids. To my surprise they use Betadine as fungicide. It makes sense as Betadine is a strong iodine based antimicrobial solution but I wondered if anyone here has used it and if it is better/worse compared to normal commercial antimicrobial solutions in the market? Can it be used on bigger plants too? |
I deflask some 20-30 flasks each year, and I use no fungicide (unless plants show evidence of attack after they are out of the flask). Plants come from a sterile environment, so there is no need to treat them - unless there is specific evidence to the contrary.

The reason I use fungicide to wash the plants is that after getting dry a bit of fungicide remain on the skin and the remaining gels and to prevent any fungal growth until plants get hardened.

I wouldn't worry about it. I always leave some of the agar gel behind. It doesn't hurt the seedlings (they probably still extract some nutrients during the transition). I have been buying 10-25 flasks per year for years, and I have never had to apply a fungicide to the seedlings. |
