Phal dormant for 2 months?
Although I don't know what may be going on within the medium, my phal seems to be dormant since I cut off the spike 2 months ago. Hasn't been showing any signs of new growth... usually when I cut off the spike there's a new leaf growing, or new roots begin to appear from the crown.
I really didn't think phals go through dormancy... any possible reasons for this? It gets enough light... all of it's brothers and sisters have been doing very well; growing news leaves, roots and such.. just this guy really hasn't been doing much. |
Not all Phals will grow roots and leaves when a spike is removed. Some Phals will also grow roots and leaves while the spike grows and blooms.
Your Phal is probably waiting for what it considers to be the time to grow. It might need warmer temps before a leaf and root growth or more light. If everything else is good, give it time. When the conditions are met, it will do its thing. Brooke |
I also have a mini phal which has not bloomed in a year but it is throwing out new leaves and alot of new roots not sure though something else is growing underneath on of the leaves not sure if this is a spike or just another root. This new growth is growing up out of the base and the middle of two bottom leaves. I will try to post a pic of it as well

When a spike is cut or flowers are all gone, a new leaf grows because usually this is around spring.
When a store bought phal in bloom for summer or fall finishes flowering, they may not always develop a new leaf right after flowering is finished. It will eventually grow when it wants to grow. lol Come to think of it, my standard sized phal hybrids always took at least one or two months before starting a new leaf even in the spring time. So mine usually spiked in the fall, then flowers opened as early as January, sometime earlier, and sometimes later. and by the time the flowers all drop, it is already march or April. I never saw new leaves starting until May or June even. then they would grow two large leaves rather quickly during the hot summer months. |
