Cattleya Bactia 'Grape Wax'

This is a plant that I grew from a community pot. It is probably several years old. The large head of flowers sits high above the surrounding plants.

Some years ago I had to transport a large one of these to the GNYOS show for another NJOS member. I noticed the fragrance while carrying it out of the house, and then put it down on the stoop while unlocking my car.

When I got it into the car, the fragrance was multiplied by a factor of 100 after the brief exposure to full sun - even wigh the weak sun in early April. It was somewhat overwhelming, so I had to open the window a bit.

An impressive spike, also strong scented - wow.

A stunning display. I had one years ago and loved it. I no longer have room for the big ones but I do miss them, this one in particular. Good growing!

Just be aware that it is a big plant. When mature, bulbs are 30-36" tall.

Very beautiful. I just recently purchased a small one from Carmela's. Hopefully I can keep it alive long enough to see it bloom.
