Dendrobium anosmum

This orchid plant is endemic to the lowland forest of Malaysia, Laos, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Papua and New Guinea at elevations of around 1300 meters; yet
I have also seen this growing on trees near the beach in Hawaii.
The culture requires warm temperatures and medium amounts of light. I keep the plant outdoors in the summer in the high humid Manhattan air and feed it k-Lite fertilizer and seaweed mix weekly weakly during growth season. From fall to winter, I keep this orchid plant dry, indoors in the south facing window and withhold water until new shoots appear in spring.
I must have given it early water and fertilizer for it produced more keikis than flowers this year.
The fragrance is intoxicating early in the morning and seems to fade at mid-day….then it is strongly fragrant again late afternoon.
I acquired this from a friend two years ago with merely five long robust canes and through the years this has given me more canes and keikis fast becoming a specimen. I am looking forward to cascading pendulous fragrant flowers in the future.

This WAS the Dendrobium that got me actually to buy more of this amazing family! I saw the picture of probably 50 anosmums hanging around the edge of the house, with some 300 canes, full of pink and white blooms, and I nearly fall off the chair! I inquire one years ago from Kawamoto, but did not read culture at that time, did not know about winter rest what so ever. It always produced only new growths and keikis of course. This year, I had first blooms, I was on the cloud 9! That smell you mentioned is just amazing! It is amazing how much one learn here! Since I joined last year June (it will be my anniversary soon), I have so so many deciduous Dendrobiums blooming this year!

Tommy, you have come a long way for less than a year of caring for orchid plants seriously. You did research and found out more culture than any newbie in this forum. I am amazed by your eclectic collection and the way you can re-bloom hard to grow orchid plants.

Many thanks Bud, to be honest, I am sometimes surprised what I can actually bloom and re bloom:-) But that just prove that research and studying helps, and there are some amazing books too! Thanks for the tip on the Dendro book, love it!

Yes that is a super healthy bunch of anosmum. I have a dark pink variety and it's growing well now, separated into two plants. Can't wait for it to bloom next Easter.
