Okay technically not an orchid
But I just want to thank the person on here who suggested these. I have not seen any gnats all winter and it is now in bloom soon. And has caught its first gnat!

I find these great for gnats. I was told not to let them flower though. I've removed the flower spikes the last few times. I understand it can weaken the plant.

Thanks for letting me know! I will be ordering more of these little guys very soon now that it is warm enough to ship things again.

The flowers are really pretty if you do let them. I have done once, but I lost that plant, so I've not let the others flower. I can't remember who told me not to let them flower though now.

these are SO easy to propagate. Snip a few leaves off at the base and plant them in a pot of sphag/fine bark. Little plantlets take a while but soon you can have what I have currently:
The mother plant has 5 flowers/buds. Flowering does absolutely no harm to the plant.....

that's a mystery grass that started growing in the sphag pot on bottom left corner. I left it as a matter of interest - now my cats think its a personal buffet for them, especially when they couldn't go outdoors because of the snow.

Wow! Iay wait a bit to snip aince.mine is only quarter sized.

like you would an African violet leaf. Snip the whole leaf as close to the base as possible, then "plant" in the mix with just about 1/3 of the stem covered. The leaf can stand upright or flop over the sides of a 2in pot. I tried both ways and it doesn't appear to matter. I keep pot sphag moist with distilled water - easy if you stand pot in a saucer that you fill regularly. These are under lights.

I even tried pollinating a flower, but propagation through leaf cuttings MUCH easier. As your one matures, they also develop "keikis" that you can separate and grow on separately. IF ONLY growing orchids was this easy :D


I would snip a couple of the outer leaves of yours....experiment....its old enough to flower, its old enough to make babies !

With good light, your butterworts should bloom most of the year. Only give them distilled water, though, and if you accidentally water them with your water/fertilizer mix, flush them very well with distilled water right away. Good luck!

I have had this one going on 6 or 7 months. And its trucking. Definitely good distilled water only period. It has a spot away from everything when I water and for about an hour after to make sure of no run off. Good filtered light but not direct. He seems very happy and now that its finally getting warm and staying warm its starting to shoot new leaflets left and right.
