repotting a divided Bulbophyllum lobbii
I need to pick the OB brains.
I divided a potbound, root-rotted, overwatered plant. I'm left with a decent piece with 6 bulbs and several single bulbs with roots. I would like to put the larger division into a basket. It is such a rambler. My conditions are hot/dry in summer and although it will be watered daily it will also dry out quickly. Can I used a fairly large (6 - 8") basket and let it grow into it? What kind of medium do others use? I currently use lava rock with my Vandas in baskets but I don't know if that would be damp enough for the Bulbo. The Bulbo roots are much finer. I can supplement with sphag or coir. Would a small bark mix work for the single pseudobulbs? Help Maureen |
My Bulbos like less light than Vandas and I would sphag up the lava rocks a good bit. Six pseudos of Lobbii would probably be ok in a 6 inch pot, though not likely to contain it very long. Mine will send a rhizome right over the edge just to watch me sigh in disbelief. Mine are in clay pots, never grew them in baskets.

I like clay pots too. I'm just afraid I'll be fighting a constant battle with having to repot it all the time. What medium mix do you use? Maureen |
I went to Hans Christiansen's nursery in Denmark. He has a whole greenhouse with some 3-400 different Bulbo species. Majority were grown in hanging plastic pots, 8-10" wide, but shallower than those used annuals.
I did not check his mix, but I do recall that there was some Perlite in it. |
Why not just mount it to a good sized piece of wood. Let is ramble around the mount. Add a good pad of spag to hold some moisture.
