Cycnodes -how to pot up
Bought a Cycnodes Taiwan Gold from Orchid show today. An international vendor. Has 2 pseudobulbs(appx 4 and 7 inch). It came in a small clear plastic pot and roots are in the damp moss. Since I am in south Florida, moss is probably not a good idea. There is no active growth on the fat pseudobulbs except may be a tiny mitten like thing on one of the 'nodes' on bigger pseudobulb.
Should I take it out of moss and place it in clay pot with bark+charcol+hydroton media or you guys advise something else? Is it right time to pot it up or should I keep in moss for a while? I am not good with moss. |
there is a medium that Euplusia mentioned a while ago about mixture of saw dust, broken clay and coarse dolomite dust for ph balance....try to search for it because it might be helpful to you.
I have my Catasetinae orchid plants at rest this winter so I will try that mix this spring.... ---------- Post added at 08:56 PM ---------- Previous post was at 08:49 PM ---------- http://www.orchidboard.com/community...tasetinae.html |
Do not know where I can find saw dust. I do not know any carpenters around here either.
My palm tree was recently removed . After tree removal, lawn guy left a lot of fine mulch like stuff in it's place. That probably came from cutting the tree with chain saw and that generated saw dust type material. May be I can use that. It is not sterile probably. Or may be coconut fiber in place of saw dust and I can crush some lava rock in place of clay. |

I use a wide shallow pot about 3-4 inches deep. I put 3 x 2" spag balls equidistant around the rim of the pot, my Catasetinae go in the middle in sieved fine bark, so that the bark also covers the moss.
You could also put a band of moss around the pot if you prefer. |
