Gender and sex options for registering

Just wanted to give out a little suggestion to the admin(s).

When you register, it says ;
"Please choose gender :
Male
Female"

I think this should changed to accommodate intersex, transgender, genderqueer and other members of the non-gender binary community.

Either of these would work, IMO..Feel free to comment.

A. Please choose sex
Male
Female
Other (specify if you wish)

B. Please choose gender
Man
Woman
Other (specify if you wish) or Non-binary (agender, bigender, third-gender..etc)

Seriously?!

Seriously what?
Non-gender binary and trans* folks should be recognized as human beings, and therefore we should have an option for them. It's a serious matter that deserves attention as 41% of the trans* community has attempted suicide, and 19% have been denied medical service because of their gender identity.

So to that, I say ; Seriously?

Interesting suggestion. My kids and I had a conversation about why people have to be classified as one thing or another at all. Gender gives some people preconceived notions about your intelligence, your abilities, and whether you can fix your own furnace, recaulk the bathtub, or properly diagnose what is wrong with your car. If it was up to me, labels would disappear. Yeah, I am a little bitter. It was NOT fun getting an Engineering degree 25 years ago as a female (at least where I went to college).

It's the internet, we are all anonymous as we chose to be.

The admins may not have a choice. "Other" sound wrong, would LGBT be better if the admins can add it?

Sorry to go in the opposite direction. I do understand your point as a way to celebrate equal rights. :)

I presume it is a serious suggestion. There are many reasons why someone may not be comfortable with self-identification as male or female. At least 1 in 2000 are born with ambiguous genitalia, and some movement in the medical community toward not arbitrarily surgically assigning a gender; chromosomal conditions; gender dysphoria and more.

I wouldn't under-estimate the discomfort some might feel when constantly faced with an either/or identification that doesn't necessarily fit them. Rather than adding catagories, why not simply eliminate this choice since it is irrelvant to the purposes of this forum? If someone wished to gender identify in their profile they would certainly be free to do so.

Geez, I wish I hadn't even posted a comment because this is not a subject that should be discussed on an orchid forum. It's not the place.

I would expect the only reason to indicate any gender would be so that others use appropriate pronouns ...

Other than he/she, his/her, ... ?

I don't remember - is it required to indicate any gender when registering?

I don't think so - Leafmite doesn't have anything indicated
