phalenopsis Orchid - information

I am a florist in Dublin Ireland doing a little research project on Phalenopsis Orchids.

I am trying to find current 2010/2012 information regarding the following

1. Total number of Phalenopsis Orchid plants World Wide and approx worldwide sales
2. Are they all bred in the same size pots - my experience is 2 sizes one for the single and double headed orchids up to 70 cm and another for the larger 80cm or 90cm tall plants.

I have located 2006 information related to the USA production and sales.

i wonder if anyone can assist me in finding this information anywhere

Hi Paulberry,

Sorry no-one seems to be able to help. Just giving your post a little bump in case that helps someone else see it. I'm afraid I would have no idea where to start research of these questions, however I would say that question 2 will depend on whether you are talking about the mass market Phals or all phals. There are some tiny tiny phalaenopsis species and they will never be put in the size pots you get the larger ones in, but equally you will only find them for sale by specialists, not in florists or supermarkets or garden centers etc.

Welcome to the OB PaulBerry. I recommend you get in touch with Peter Lin. He is the owner of Big Leaf Orchids. Here is a link to his website. Peter is a well known expert on Phalaenopsis and imports to the US plants from SE Asia--the primary source of imported plants. He is also a member of the International Phalaenopsis Society. If anyone knows anything about Phalaenopsis, that would be Peter.

I saw this article posted on Facebook yesterday. It might provide some contacts to get more information.
