Other orchid enthusiasts in the family + Bloom picture!
 

Hello all!

I was wondering if any of you had other family members who were orchid growers too? Is visiting them to see what they are growing the original “orchid board” experience? :D

My late Grand Uncle became interested in orchids (he was always a grower of many things!) more than a decade ago, and his wife and daughter continue to have many beautiful orchids. I always look forward to visiting my Great Aunt, just to see her of course, but also to peak at her amazing set-up and her orchids and blooms. Yesterday she had this lovely Lc. Angel Love x C. skinneri in bloom, along with two “Lady Slippers” and some lovely basketed dendrobiums.

My dad was an orchid grower and would probably still be one if the nursery he worked at hadn't been sold off (he had a 10' x 20' greenhouse on the property) and if he hadn't bought a $400 orchid when I was young that promptly caused my mom to say no more. Haha.

My grandfather grew orchids, but he stopped before I could appreciate them. But I have pictures of him and my grandmother holding an orchid they had gotten to rebloom. Back in the 60's or 70's, they were just glowing from pride. He still always had plants but could no longer care for his orchids towards the end of his life. The other orchid person in my life, I see too often. LOL. In my own household hardly counts.

I have that same hybrid! In sheath now - grown outdoors, and spikes / buds take forever to develop in the chilly weather :p

Nope, no real orchid growers in the family to speak of. My great grandmother was the only other orchid enthusiast, she was apparently into cymbidiums. However, it wasn't until after she passed and I started getting into orchids that anybody ever mentioned her collection to me. Unfortunately, most cymbidiums get too large for me, since I grow under lights, and they don't do so well in this climate. I've tried them a few times, but never with much luck.

NO, therefore everyone just think I am a nut. Oh well, maybe they are right...lol...Jean
