Dendrochillum magnum

This orchid plant is endemic to the Philippines.
The plant blooms in the fall with a long cascading cluster of 1.5 cm wide rubbery scented flowers in the evening and in the early morning smells like my sneakers after a mile run.
I grow this from cool to warm temperature with medium to bright light on the south facing window. Potted in a 4 inches round plastic with fine bark, coco chip, lava rock, charcoal and perlite = I inherited this in moss but I was not comfortable so I repotted it in the orchid mix it is in now. I give it dry periods between watering and reduce watering during the winter to about once a week to mimic the dry season and the monsoon rainy season of its original habitat.
I feed this weekly weakly k-lite fertilizer with seaweed mix.

How long have you had the Magnum, Bud?

Bud 10-05-2013 12:26 AM

Thank You for the visit!

I got this orchid plant a year and a half ago from a grower/seller in Puerto Rico.

How can North Americans import orchids from other countries, without the strict importation rules that apply here in this country? Do you have a quarantine process?

TOMMYMIAMI 10-05-2013 01:30 AM

Gorgeous Bud, I adore Dendrochillums! And amazing close up pics of the blooming spike

Technically, Puerto Rico is an American Territory so we don't need all the paperwork to buy/trade plants between the 2 countries.

Any other country though...all paperwork is required or you risk confiscation of the plants...or worse. And, yes, imported plants can potentially be subject to quarantine but nothing like you guys in Australia contend with.

We have strict import regulations too. We aren't allowed to import from other countries without the appropriate paperwork, which is very costly. Puerto Rico is an unincorporated territory of the United States, so it is not considered an imported orchid.

Bud, gorgeous pictures and plant. I don't have one of these, so it's something I'm going to keep my eye out for after seeing your pictures.

Thank You Tommy !

* I have to do a close up of the labellum, this is the proof that it is a magnum....this orchid plant is sometimes confused with Dendrochilum latifolium var macranthum ....

Dendrochilum magnum= The labellum more or less erect with a somewhat cymbiform conformation. Column strongly incurved; stelidia sub equal to the column proper.
Dendrochilum latifolium= Labellum pendent, flat (side lobes are also often erect). Column slightly incurved; stelidia shorter than the column proper.

Australia have stricter policy in terms of import/export of anything.
The USA have a more lenient import/export laws and stricter airport policies.

Thank You for the visit, nikkik !!!!!

This orchid plant have it double size than the other Dendrochillums. The longest leaf is 14 inches and the bulb is 4 inches in diameter. My other four kinds of Dendrochillum plants in my possession are half size than this ....

Well if that isn't a "ringing" endorsement of its fragrance.

Love that first shot, Bud! Awesome close-up. The 4th shot was cool too -- neat visual effect taken at that angle.
