Recovering Wilsonara Calico Gem

I got this plant (I bough two of the same) at TJ last September. It is so far the only oncidium type that I've hd that flower again from the old spike, just like tolumnias do.
nice flower count, small plant size, long blooming season, clean green leaves...I kept them although they both had their pbs all wrinkled up within the first week of purchase. None of the leaves fell off. never repotted as I wasn't sure if I really wanted to keep them. They continued to bloom well into February. Both plants initiated one new growth, but growth isn't that great. definitely root damage. One is at least slowly growing and I even spotted a low spike emerging. totally unexpected with this plant being in such poor condition. :) The other one has almost halted the growth. The roots are almost all gone too. I'm just keeping it to see how it progress. This one is shown in the first picture. The flower picture is from October in its peak. |
I would definitely try to save these!

I was going to send you one but wasn't sure since they both looked so wrinkled up. didn't want you to think "what is he sending me?" lol
I'm surprised (and glad) they are at least clinging to life. |

I wish you were somewhere near like Toronto so we could meet in Buffalo or something.
Airmail can get busted I think, although there's a chance not to be busted. lol oh, well...blame the size of this continent! haha |
Give it a go. Have you checked the medium ? If the medium is old and sour that could be attributing to the chid's condition
|
Medium is definitely bad. lol
I just never took the time to repot them. A lot of my orchids are in need of repotting, but it is rather dreadfrul because there are so many. lol |
Youl'd be surprised at how well this would grow if you repotted it in some lava rock or medium bark. They really like to be repotted if they are struggling in old media. Keep it in a small pot though as the roots are very fine and dense which makes keeping them dry a task. Therefore the larger size media which dries more quickly. Nice paph back there.
|
Lava Rock is not an option for me. Things dry out way too fast in it.
I like my oncidium types in either moss or paph mix from repotme. I need something that stays moist otherwise I end up killing them by drying out. It's funny how all the roots look dead but apparently they are alive. I'm surprised all the leaves are intact. Yeah, I was holding it up above my paph 'bench'. |
Oh it's so beautiful! You should definitely keep it!
