NO ID Orchid Keiki Potting Help Needed

4 Attachment(s)
Hello Everyone!
I got this beautiful NOID Orchid in January and it has been blooming the entire time. Well I accidentally broke off the top of one of the plants. About a month later the second plant looked like it had a new spike. Now I am starting to see that it is a keiki. I am pretty new to orchids and have only been doing this for a year. So far I 've had one phal keiki but it didn't live :( So this little guy means so much to me! I don't know what I should do with it as it looks like the spike is starting to die. Any tips are greatly appreciated!
Thank you,
Pam

That's an Epidendrum - they like to keiki :)

When there are at least three inches of roots, you can remove it and pot it (tho waiting longer for more roots doesn't hurt) :) It's very possible the spike will not completely die for quite a while yet - I have one I broke off the top of the spike last year sometime, and got a keiki shortly after - it's still there, spike is still alive ...

Thank you for your help Sonya! It is an amazing plant. Does it grow like a dendrobium? I have been having a hard time figuring out how it propagates (before the keiki anyway..)

I only have a couple of these, a smaller growing species, and a bigger hybrid. The species grows like a weed for me -likes a pretty fair amount of light and water. The hybrid does less well for me, but stays alive ... I really think I shouldn't leave the hybrid outside in winter :p *Note to self: Bring hybrid Epi inside this fall* Probably intermediate or warm to hot temps are best ... I'm sure others can advise more specifically about the temps :) But lots of light, and shouldn't get too dry.

I'm not sure about all Epidendrums, but don't cut spikes off until they are completely dead, some at least (my little species is one) will get new buds from a previously bloomed spike.
