Grammatophyllum speciosum, World largest orchid

Grammatophyllum speciosum, or Tiger Orchid, decided to bloom after many many years. It is grown in the middle of a road divider.
As this is not a common occurrence and is quite spectacular, it made the local news.

Here are some pictures of the bloom. Enjoy

Wow! I love it!

It's beautiful!

That is stunning. Did the report on the local news provide the dimensions of the plant?

And if this is typical of your road-dividers, they are far superior to ours. The other day when I was at a stoplight near my home, I noticed a beaten-up baseball cap and several beer cans "decorating" the adjacent road-divider--and this was (thankfully, I suppose) not considered newsworthy.

Good one! I hate to tell you this but we consider most Americans to be litter bugs.

Fabulous!

I'd like to stop my car there a little big longer.

No offense taken. I consider many (I won't say most, as I'm trying to be optimistic) to be litterbugs too. I take a large trash bag with me about once a week when I walk my dog around our neighborhood, and it never fails to be filled with debris by the time we get back home. I'm going to stop there, since I could easily start ranting about this highly annoying and utterly mind-boggling bad habit that too many people have.

And I apologize to the original poster for getting a bit sidetracked and briefly hijacking your thread. That grammatophyllum is really a stunning plant. And if I lived in an environment where I could grow a monster-sized orchid like that, I would acquire one immediately.

Good for you! I think people are trying to change their attitudes about littering.
I too apologize about the sidetracking. I would love to see that grammatophyllm in person. I have seen photos of huge specimens and they are really impressive.

Beautiful photos and thanks for sharing. You certainly have colorful roads! I am happy to see such a bright sight on a day when the snow is still coming down and temps are way below normal here!
