Tips on Mounting Bulbophyllum Frostii
 

Hey everybody, I am kinda of new to orchids. I have a B. Frostii that I would like to mount but I just wanted to get some tips on how I would go about doing it. Thanks,

I don't know if I can help because I gave up on my mounted frostii after mounting it twice.

I mounted it on cork and both times the plant would die in the middle. I ended up with new growth on both ends of the mount but open space in the middle.

When I get another one I will pot it up in a small net pot and let it ramble around the pot. Most Bulbos are easy for me but little frostii had a mind of its own.

It shouldn't be very difficult. I have a few mounted Bulbophyllums.

The procedure goes as such:

1. Clean your mount. This is important. If it isn't clean, there could be some issues with getting it established quickly. Sometimes dirt gets trapped in between some crevices, or sometimes rotted pieces of wood get in there. Clean those, and the mount should be ready.

2. Put a thin layer of moss on top of the mount.

3. Place the orchid on top of the moss.

4. Work some of the moss over certain parts of the roots. Do not cover them up completely.

5. Tie everything together using fishing line. When using fishing line, don't cut small pieces and tie. Keep the fishing line on the spool. Wrap the orchid in place, then cut and tie once the plant is secure.

Where you place the plants and how well you take care of the plant will determine how fast they establish. A Bulbophyllum like Bulb frostii should be able to establish in a few months (about 3 - 6 months depending on the time of the year). If you're doing this now, it should establish itself before the summer ends.

It is an intermediate growing Bulbo.

Grow under moderately bright indirect light - not shade. These can take the brighter light.

Yep, that method is what I do. Only exception is that I have carpal tunnel and find the fishing line too fiddly so I use green plastic coated tie wire that I buy on a spool from the garden store. It doesn't look quite as nice while it is establishing as you can see the wire but after a couple of months I cut the wire off.
