I've really been wanting to try my hand at terrariums lately. I currently have a little simple moss terrarium and an unfinished fishbowl terrarium that so far only has fittonia in it.

Today I was out shopping and I came across this somewhat large lidded vase (travel mug included in picture for size reference, since my measuring tools seem to have gone out for tea or something) and it was cheap, so I bought it. However, I'm still very much the newb when it comes to terrariums, and I'm not really sure what would work well in it. I'm not definitely settled on an orchid, but I do definitely want to explore the option. What types do well in terrariums and would grow in a manner that would compliment the size and shape of the jar?

Or, do you think with me being a newb with terrariums, would an orchid be too difficult for me at the moment?

If you haven't read my other posts, I've had Phals for a few years, but nothing else so far as far as orchids go.

You could try some jewel orchids, or a teacup Phal (just make sure it really is a small one that will stay small :) ). Jewel orchids typically have really interesting foliage, but small and not so noticeable blooms, but they do bloom.

I have never done anything with terrariums so I dont know much about it other then you will want to put a small plant in there

I would put a orchid in there I dont think a orchid would be any harder then something else. Good luck and let us know what you put in there :)

What are your growing conditions like? How much light is available, how warm/cool is your home?

I have south windows and east windows available. My kitchen (south) can be pretty bright and stays in the upper 60's in the winter. My bedroom (east) is actually fairly dark and a few degrees colder.

Make sure you don't place the container with the lid on in sunlight. It will cook the plant in a closed container.
