Potinara Red Crab 'Kuau Miau' AM/AOS
This orchid is an intermittent bloomer that springs out spike on every new lead.
I give this a constant temperature 55F at night to 80F in the day, partial sun, on the eastern facing kitchen window sill. I have a humidifier that is set 60% or higher that depends on the season (winter is very dry and in the summer we have high humidity in Manhattan) I water this until potting medium reach almost dryness because this plant has more susceptibility to root rot; and water regimen usually every 7-10 days that I thoroughly saturate with the faucet in full throttle flowing under the sink. I cut off old flower spikes after flowering is complete. I repot every 12-18 months and make sure they are held tightly within the pot so it doesn’t wobble and disturb the roots since this is a very important aspect of Potinara culture. Light is the next important aspect. If you observe that the plant is declining, the reason might be: generally the root system has been lost. http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8048/8...6c6e4681cc.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8194/8...b32e023a85.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8043/8...450694e819.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8056/8...ffcb86a2fc.jpg http://farm9.staticflickr.com/8468/8...aaa5a221ff.jpg |
Gorgeous bloom! Is this potted right into the vase? I assume you have holes in it then?? Looks great!

Beautiful color!

Thank You, silken!!!!
Yes I drilled holes under the glass vase; I have to pot it in a heavy steady container plus monitor the root growth; because the longest leaf I have is already a foot long and it is becoming top heavy. The flower itself is five and a half inches in diameter and this can grow into a big plant soon. *Thank You, for the vist and kind comment Jeff ! |
Beautiful-Love the Colour!

Thank You, for the visit and your kindness Monika !

Stunning!
You said you drilled holes in the bottom of the glass vase? This is something I've been contemplating doing, but have not yet built up the courage to try thinking I will shatter the whole thing. Can you do that at home yourself with a normal drill? What kind of 'drill bit' do you use? Those for metal or those for concrete, or are there specific ones for glass...? |
Gorgeous, Bud and I like the very original and creative potting.

Thank You kindly, Ron !
@Silje....I chose an ordinary vase sold in flower shops and used a half inch diamond coated drillbit(you can find this in any hardware stores), if you go to YouTube you can search glass hole drilling videos but I use a pail of water then immerse the glass vase upside down where it has 1/4 inch water above the bottom of the vase and I start drilling using a battery operated drill(electricity and water is dangerous)this is a recharcheable battery that comes with the drill....when I learned how to drill holes in glass I started potting some of my orchids in glass so I can monitor the root growth=I have to fush once a month for algae ....since I have observed algae on some of the roots then I flush everything even the clay pots since I know algae is in my environment |
That is a lovely way to grow orchids!!! if you want to enjoy the blossom on a table all you have to do is grab it and its already for display..ingenious!!!
