I found these orchids in the bulky trash and need to know how to care for them. They appear to be healthy, but they both need to be repotted and one looks like it could be devided. I do not know the species. Sorry the photos are kind of dark.

Those look to be phalanopsis. Repost your question/pics in that forum. Plus, take a look at the sticky at the top of the forum.

Hi there,
You have such a big heart!
I agree, there's lots of info in regards to crucial steps to take with the Phals.

I'll try to outline a few that you can take ASAP.

Your plants look rather sad, most likely dehydrated.
Cut off the spikes and soak the roots over night in a lookwarm water. If you have some seaweed, this would help but even just water would do.
The roots should plump up.

Later, examine the roots that one would expect to be green or light yellow and plump. All others are dead and need to be cut off.
You would need to repot those poor babies in some very airy mix of bark and charcoal. You can leave them wrapped in a moistened paper towel for the time being and go buy an orchid mix specially designed for Phals. Letting them sit for a while would NOT hurt the plants.

If you can acoomplish this much, it would give you some time to think about next steps and read some info on the forum.

Water your plants after repotting and then do not water them again till the medium is quite dry. Which can be detected by placing a barbecue skewer in the pot.

Lastly, avoid watering on the crown and dry up any droplets with the paper towel -promptly.

Thanks for the information. Going to go to one of the garden or orchid stores today to get some orchid mix.

You can also mist the underside of the leaves to help re-hydrate the plant. Good luck!

Should I cut the spikes at the second node or all the way off?

Paddle_grl 01-13-2013 08:04 PM

In this case, I would cut them all the way off. If you look at the semi hydroponic thread (Or google it) It might be another option for you to look at in the future. Phal's do quite well with that. Good luck!

Rescued phal can be really nice with a little TLC
