Spike or Growth...what is this 'thingy'?

I bought this lovely noid cymb in March of 09. Has done nothing but grow new psuedos. :( It lives in my back yard from late April , to October, so it gets the chill nights, and nice mottled sun [some morning direct].
I would love to hear that this growth has flower buds in it.... but really just asking opinions :)

It's a cymbidium? (not sure what a Cyb is ..._. Could be a spike. Timing is about right. I find that cym spikes are roundish and elongate pretty quickly, so you will know soon enough :)

LOOKS LIKE A SPIKE TO ME

Don't move its position, and don't bring it inside to enjoy too soon. Don't want to cause bud drop. Unless frost threatens it, leave it be -- coolish until many buds have opened.

Moving to a warm room will doom the buds.

Take care
Rex

I had the same problem, lots of new growth but no spikes. So I also did the cold treatment - now I have a lot of leaves that are frost damaged. BUT - 3 spikes that are about 3 inches long - and roundish. AND 3 new growths - like yours. The spikes are soft/spongy if you gently squeeze at the end. Yours in my opinion is new growth. You will soon know.

Looks like spikes to me, tho I have been fooled a time or two... ;)

As orchidsarefun mentioned, if you gently squeeze them, spikes should feel hollow until they get bigger.

Let us know what they become!

Happy , Happy New Years!! ...and it sure will be for me :). The growth turned out to really, really be a Spike!!! lol. Today, I noticed it opening just the tiniest bit, and I have noticed the buds inside for weeks! Will post pics soon, when the flower buds emerge :))

It looks like a spike. I leave mine outside until the end of October, and when I bring them in they spike a few weeks later. Except for this year. No spikes yet on mine.
