repotting psychopsis
 

i just bought a new psychopsis madenhall "hildos" FCC AOS

its a beautiful plant with 3 new mature pseudobulbs and about 3 or 4 older pseudobulbs all the leaves are in pristine condition and there is new root growth, but no spikes are present on the plant...however clearly its overgrown the 4" plastic container and needs something bigger...it seems to be really packed in there tight.

i want to put it in a 6 " clay orchid pot...but i also think it might be cool mounted on a treefern slab...any advice would be apriciated.

also should i wait till it warms up in the spring or can i do it now when its still reasonably warm out?.....is there anything special about how to treat an overgrown plant such as this?

lol..so i just took it out of the pot and put the whole thing on a larger pot old mix and all and put some new bark around it...i didnt mess with any of the roots which looked healthy and growing.

i just love the way this plant looks...its kinda prehistoric looking in a way, with these thick stubby pseudobulbs and leathery leaves with great markings...im not sure why there is no spike yet...but i almost dont care.

Hehe always good when an orchid looks cool out of bloom :)

That is a nice looking one. I just got one recently with similar markings but not quite as big of a plant!

I have grown only 1 Psychopsis papilio, so I'm not an expert with this genera. But to me, the pot looks like the appropriate size for the plant.

i put it in that pot. the one that it was in was much smaller...i carefully loosened the plant out of the older smaller pot and put the whole thing bark and all in the pot you see in the photo..i didnt touch the root system at all or any of the mix it was in (the roots held everthing together)...there was about a half inch space around the plant so i just filled in around it wth orchid mix. this pot is better, it will have more room for the new roots that are growing...thats if i dont kill it somehow. lol

Looks real good, it will start a spike soon, they grow fast, once it starts blooming , it will keep blooming on the same spike.

Oh I was hoping you'd post a photo! I was going to ask you to. This is the plant I'm having trouble with right now. I ordered one and it came very dry looking. Not the medium, that was lightly moist. But the leaves seem so dry compared to all the nice plump leaves on all my other orchids. They don't seem quite as nice as yours. I also re-potted as it was in a super small pot (3 1/2") it's now in in a 4" which doesn't seem like much, but is quite a bit larger in terms of his roots spreading better.

Are the leaves on yours kind of dry? Dry isn't the right word. I'm not sure how else to say it. Maybe firmer/harder?

Anyone know how to help him get healthier? Also you expect yours to spike soon? I thought it can take a bit to spike then will bloom on it for a few years. Am I wrong in this, should mine spike soon too?
