Unknown Dendrobium??

I rescued this NOID last spring and it just started to bloom. The plant is only six inches tall, and the bloom is a bit darker than the picture depicts. Please help identify. Thanks.

NOID ID'd

I think I have identified my NOID. It is a

Dendrobium bigibbum var. compactum

It's a hybrid, if you ask me.

I'd have to agree with weng on that. The vast varieties of Dendrobiums makes it nearly impossible to identify a particular one unless it has a very specific form.

While your plant is a beauty, I don't think it's what you came up with :(

More likely, it is a hybrid...maybe it has bigibum in it's parentage :hmm

Den. Bigibbum

I am pretty sure it is a Den. Bigibbum var. Compactum. Close enough to enjoy at least. Better named than orphaned.

Dougd- I agree with you because I have seen species pictures of dendrobium bigibbum x campactum or var. compactum and it looks like the closest match to the flowers. I am surprised you identified your own plant, but very good work- I got a 2 cane piece with 3 keikis on it and it looks surprisingly similar to the picture of the plant. Thank you- as I will keep mine tagged as the same unless it blooms otherwise.

Are both of those photos of the same plant?

Don't want to confuse things, but there's so much complexity over the exact naming of these things... As far as i understand it, Den superbbum (inc. var compactum) should have a white mark on the labellum as its distinguishing feature. Without a white mark its far more likely to be Den phalaenopsis. Its rare to actually get the correct photo on the net.

That said, the second photo definitely looks like a Den phalaenopsis but the first photo looks different. The labellum looks far more pronounced, like a hybrid. I would call it a Den phalaenopsis hybrid.

Actually i would call it a Vappodes phalaenopsis hybrid now. We gotta get used to name changed some time i guess?

I'm no expert, this thread just gave me a great excuse to dust off my 'Native Orchids of Australia'. Its the latest edition so i think it should be right.
