Funny looking thing growing on the Phal

Hi guys,

I've gotten a few Phal from a restaurant owner last October with 1 fully infested with the white cotton bug even on it's spike.

I decide to take a chance using a paint brush and brush the phal on it's leave and flower bud with olive oil as an experiment even dipping drops of oil in the middle cause it was really infested with bug. The phal didn't die, instead it even flower with 3 buds only lasting 1 month.

After it finish blooming, i cut the spike down and left it alone. Went for holiday for 2 weeks, coming back to find
something almost look like a new spike branching out but it isn't. It look weird.

Can someone please look at the pictures i uploaded and tell me what is it?

Thank you

I'm not sure what you mean by "looking pinched from the top".

Is the leaf in the center of the plant dead? If it is I'm guessing this growth may be a Keiki.

Yes it looks dead

Shinnok 04-15-2012 03:55 PM

But don't keiki grow on stem?

quiltergal 04-15-2012 04:01 PM

Keiki can grow from a spike node. They can also grow from the base of the plant. This one looks like it started out as a flower spike and when the crown of the main plant died the spike changed gears and began to grow a Keiki instead of flowers. I would not be surprised if it put out a basal Keiki as well.

After examine again, looks like only the new leaf is damage.

Please look at it.
