My orchid has green roots but its media is dry do i water it?
Hi,
I was wondering if i need to water my orchids when the media is dry yet the roots are firm, green? |
What you are seeing on the roots is probably algae, which stays green even after the roots are dry. That can definitely be confusing. After watering thoroughly, watch the color of the roots, and hopefully you will be able to see a color change when the roots are saturated. The young ends of the roots should be the easiest to tell a change. What kind of orchid is it?

OKay thankyou..I have 5 phalaenopsis orchids, all in clear pots and bark media..everywhere says wait till the roots turn silvery/grey??then water...

The general rule is let them dry before watering again. I don't let mine go completely dry, only about 3/4. If the leaves start to feel soft to the touch, instead of nice and firm, or if they wilt at all, then you waited too long to water. You can check the dryness/wetness of the medium by leaving a bamboo skewer in the pot for a few minutes and pulling it out, or just judge by picking up the pot to see if it feels light. These are all things you have to figure out plant by plant. Hope this helps! TONS of information is in this thread, and it's worth the read:
