Fans with windowsill setups
 

I recently got a 6" oscillating fan for some air flow on my orchids. I know air flow is the #1 thing for the majority of them so I figured its needed. Now, I grow them on a heat mat that gets up to around 80 on the warm days.

The issue is I have some in clay pots (Eplc Jackie Bright and Pot. Burana Beauty) that get down right chilly to the touch with the fan on. I know it cant be too good for them because they like it warm during the day but the majority are in plastic pots and stay pretty warm.

Am I worrying too much about it? Should I cut down the time the fan is on?

Are you leaving the fan on 24/7? I don't think it's necessary, and you could probably turn it off at night.

I'll confess that I don't use any fans at all, with no issues. The orchids grow both on the windowsill and on shelves under lights. The trick is to not pack them tightly together, and not water in the evening.

Well, there is zero air circulation where they are at and its the coolest part of the apartment too.

Right now, Im leaving it on for about 6 hours a day and found that its really drying out the ones in the plastic but making the clay pots really cool.

If you can put it on a timer, I would run it for a couple of hours in the morning and then for a couple of hours in the late afternoon/early evening.

Great idea Gage. I need to get a timer for my light anyways so I need to be on the lookout for a 2 plug one.

I turn on the fans when I water in the morning to help dry the crown of my plants...I keep them on while I am at work...I close them when I arrive home from work because it dries out my eyes ... fans, heaters and humidifiers can be quite a handful when youre about to sleep in an apartment situation...and I need peace and quiet in the Manhattan area where there is constant noise
