Yeah, that's the catch with breeding with Catasetums, you usually get one gender at a time. Male flowers are supposedly more common than female flowers, and from what I have heard, more extreme conditions are needed to cause female flowers. I wish there was a surefire way to get a gender you want.

That's why you gotta appreciate the heavies like Gene Monnier, who has done more for the Catasetum alliance than the Easter Bunny did for Easter !!! I mean, painted chicken eggs and an Easter Bunny ???????? Where DID that come from ???? And what exactly does it have to do with Christ rising from the dead ?????? GIVE ME A BREAK !!!! :rofl: And what kills me is that it was passed down from parents as dead pan serious as Santa & the reindeer !!! At least there's a story behind Santa and it is semi-logical ! But a bunny passing out colored chicken eggs ??????? :rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl::rofl: Did ANYBODY ever believe that ??? Better yet, did anybody EVER figure it out ??

Actually, a lot of really big, mature plants will only throw female flowers. I have that problem with a Cat tenebrosum, so I'm gonna chop the bejezzez out of it this summer! :biggrin:

well... the problem is teh interpretation given to it nowadays... originally it had no painted eggs, and had nothing to do with christ at all... it was a pagan tradition that the catholic church arbitrarily incorporated (moving Christ death and resurrection again to match with the spring celebration)... same as the Christmass tree and Jesus birth...
