What are these phals?
Hello,
Recently I came across these on the web: Phal.violacea 'blue Mas x dark red US' Phal.violacea 'blue Mas x blue US' Does anybody know what are they? Thanks |
Phal. violacea is a species Phalaenopsis.
The cultivar names represent specific plants that are its parents. such as 'blue Mas x dark red US' Usually these cultivar names are given to awarded plants. I did a quick check of the AOS data base of 196 awarded plants and did not see these names. Unless I messed the awards, these names are then just names a specific grower gave to his plants to keep track of which plants he seed crossed. Seed grown plants can vary a lot in color and shape. Unless you see it in flower, you should just expect a regular violacea |
Yep. Generally speaking a cross get's a handle from the grower and , if it's worthy and wins an award, gets mericloned.
Ahhhhhhhh. The good old days. Paying $500 and waiting for two or three years for a division. |
Context would be helpful in deciphering what you found. Another interpretation could be that 'blue MAS x red US' should have been (blue MAS x red US), indicating that the parents were a bluish clone crossed with a "red" clone). Don't know what "Mas" might have meant.
Further: I googled and found the website where this was advertised. The company selling these appears to be mainly an importer, and a guess would be that they are repeating what the plants were labelled by the Asian breeders. |
Thank you for the explanation.
Basically it is just violacea specie as far as I am concerned, right? |
violacea x violacea is still violacea regardless of the clonal name.
