Saying Hello

Hello from Maine! I started purchasing orchids last November and I have quite a variety and enjoy them so much. I don't really have a great year-round "orchid set-up" but I have a sunroom where most of them are and I am hoping to have that room heated for winter. It will be too crowded in my home otherwise. This orchid bug has really gotten me good. My husband likes my beauties, but I think he is wondering if and when I will stop buying them. :scratchhead: He thinks I have enough. Mostly I buy seedlings that need time to grow and blossom. I have really struggled with my patience in that regard, but it will be worth it in the long run. My phals are blossomed, so that is wonderful, and now and then I buy a cattleyea that is blossomed....but not very often. I have a dendrobium blossomed right now that helps me cope with all the promising ones yet to produce a blossom. All in all I enjoy my "chids" and this whole experience is a good one. I crave to see other people's orchid collections, but there aren't many that I know of nearby. Any other Mainers out there? This OB site is so awesome! I have a hard time with my lack of computer knowledge, but I am trying. Kiki-do

Hi and welcome to the board. Yes there are a couple others from your "neck of the woods". Once you get settled, we'd like to see pics of your 'chids and the orchid room. Hope you get some heat out there as it will give you more room for more orchids

Hi Candice, My favorite orchid? Probably Phals because they blossom so long....no Catts because they smell so beautifully....actually, I have a young Brassavola nodosa that I am so excited about as I have seen one other blossomed and they are beauties. Then there are the two Angraecums, also quite young....is there really such thing as a favorite? These are like my kids...I can't choose. :) I put two orchids outdoors on my (other open) porch this summer and both have developed problems. I'm not sure how you do the outdoor thing with bugs, winds, and unsettled weather, but I am finding it a bit much for my "chids." Is there a special technique when you expose them to the outdoors with bugs, and other added elements? Thanks so much for replying to my introduction. I had many nice comments. Kiki-do

Hi Ross, Thanks for the reply. How do you post pictures? I am not a great photographer, but I take lots of pictures and once in a while I get lucky with a good one. Kiki-do
