Dendrobium question
Hey everyone. I just cleared off some crown-rotted pieces from an anonymous non-deciduous Dendrobium (if anyone can find my other post, with the pictures, it's the tall one). I tore off the dry sheath bits and exposed the living bit on the pseudobulb, and I'm wondering: Will the tip callus off at the tip, or will it continue to rot?
For some more information- I'm in Austin (it's been about 95- 80-85 where the orchids are because they're pretty well shaded behind some oaks) with humidity of about 35-40%. Should I be worried, or will it be fine? Do I need to chop it off? I'm also asking because it's got some new very healthy root growth going now. Thanks! |
I'm not sure, but I would put cinnamon on the top to help it dry up and callus over. That should help stop the rot continuing.

if the plant is getting enough light as dendrobiums typically need the callusing wont need any help, but cinnamon will help inhibit any fungal or bacterial remnants. Dendrobiums need bright light..hidden under a shady texas post oak might not be giving it enough. I keep my "nobile" dendrobiums in glorious full morning sun till noon. After that, the afternoon sun in Texas right now is deadly to anything that gets in its way. good luck glad to see fellow texans anywhere.

Ok, I'll do the cinnamon thing. I actually cauterized it with a lighter- not sure if it's hot enough, but I was only using the blue part of the flame, and I did it twice.
It's actually not quite SHADY shady, it's more semi-shaded. The area gets shade at different parts of the day; I give my Cymbidium and Cattleya afternoon/evening sun, but maybe they need more? At this point I've got REALLY high-sun requiring (and soil-drying) required succulents in the brightest and hottest spot- three Lithops, one Pleispilos (with a seed pod, for free, hooray!!), a Stenocactus, and an Astrophytum myriostigma all up there. But there is enough room for an orchid or two, if they need even more sun and heat than what I'm giving them. I'd just be concerned about the humidity at that point, really. I suppose I should at least move the Dendrobium, because it's got a yellowish tinge along the edge of the biggest leaves (could also be a sign that it was slightly neglected before I got it.... I'm not even going to BEGIN on the problems with my Cattleya's roots and leaves on that subject). Thoughts? |
