Propogating from old dendrobium stems
I have just built a greenhouse and dont have many orchids right now, but I do have a dendrobium that just finished flowering from a new stem with 6 old leggy stems that dont look like they are any use, and would like to take a shot at propogating some new plants from them.
Can I cut them and grow new plants from them and does anyone know of some photos of this procedure, I dont know the terms describing the parts of the plant like most of you, so a text description is not much good to me, I do learn well though. Jerry:scratchhead: |
Ooo! I saw this in one of my beginner orchid books! Orchids: A Splendid Obsession by Wilma and Brian Rittershausen. I bought it a few years ago at Borders, but I'm sure you could find it on Amazon too! They had pictures too! Good luck! Take :photo: to let us know how it goes!

I've gotten a few dead looking dendrobium shoots to make new growths. They had no leaves at all. I took them potted them up in sprag moss by themselves and just kept the moss moist. It took a while but they started sending new growth up from the base. The trick was just not giving up.

I ran out to the greenroom to snap a photo for you

Hi jerry,
I normally cut the canes and keep them in a bright warm, dry place, no watering at all. There will slowly develop roots and shoots. it will takes sometimes 3 to 4 mths depend on the condition. Watering will only rot the canes. Even Oncidium I does that. http://www.orchidboard.com/community.../10607_003.jpg http://www.orchidboard.com/community.../10607_002.jpg Regards KC |

I read this thread sevaral times. I had old dendrobium stems. I cut them from the main plant and kept it in an old empty fish tank near the other orchid plants.(terr, bec its closed from top too)In a shady place After some time I checked them .there is a healthy lil keikie growing from one of it. Today when I checked them all of them got keikies .About six of them. I prepared a small terr
from an old fish tank .No fans are there. but I kept stems there too. now both worked for me.  |
I had NO idea that this could be done!
