Sources of Orchid Seed

Here are sources of orchid seed you can buy from. I have tried them and can recommend them for purchases.

The Australian Orchid Foundation Australian Orchid Foundation - Seed & Protocorm Bank

The Orchid Seed Poject (OSP) OSP

The Terrestrial Orchid Forum Seed Bank (not only tuberous terrestrials, but psuedobulbous types). Terrestrial Orchid Forum :: Seedbank

orchidflasks.co.uk www.orchidflasks.co.uk/orchid_seed_27.html

Laminar Flow in Austria http://www.laminarflow.at/listen.php...list_arten&s=1
This seed bank may exchange seed for other species seed that they want.

I have not tried these sources, but am told they are reputable.

Silverhill Seeds: Seeds from Africa

Some that are new to me.

Calypso Orchid seed http://calypsoorchid.com/

Chile Flora www.chileflora.com Just do a search for Orchid to get to their orchid seeds.

Brazil Plants www.brazilplants.com

The Hardy Orchid Society Seed Bank www.hardyorchidsociety.org.uk/seed_bank.htm Not sure if its still running, have emailed them. The site is there still, but no new donations.

Perhaps the moderator can make this sticky

Silverhill is hit or miss. You gotta keep trying until you get a good batch of one particular species. It's not like they tell you how many percent of the seeds are viable or anything like that. That's for the buyer to figure out.

I just added another to the list above. Please suggest others if anyone knows more sources

Well, ordering orchid seed is always hit and miss in the sense you cant know how the seed was treated before getting to the seed bank, or how it was sent, and a number of other factors. It is the risk you take to get new species seed I guess

Orchid seed sources

I know this is an older post, but I'd like to get into flasking and I'm having a hard time finding sources of orchid seed. Ebay vendor, KP Orchids and Plants, in Thailand, seems to be a reputable vendor. Every other "orchid seed" listing on Ebay looks like a scam.

Most of the vendors listed in this original post seem to be either out of business, or have a very limited selection in the species that they offer. Does anyone currently flasking have a dependable source of seeds, with a wide variety of species?

I also stick to KP Orchids. The seeds are good and always delivered. No problems with the stock received. Just wished they had more variety, since that's where I end up buying.

Can you re-check the links and look for more sellers?

This is an old thread. None of the individuals who posted the messages have been active on the Board lately.

To Orchidomanic:

What is your purpose in looking for 'orchid seed'?
  • Most of the 'orchid seed' sold on Ebay are scams.
  • If you get random seed from others, you have no idea what quality parents were used (or if it even is what they say it is).
If you just want to experiment with flasking, presumably you are not picky about what you get to work with. However, in order for it not to be a total waste of time, you should at least have the names of parents (IE, don't do NOID Phalaenopsis).

On the other hand, if you want to be in a position to sell flasks or seedlings, bite the bullet and buy superior quality plants of the genera you are interested in, and produce your own.
