s/h and leaf pleating
I recently aquired an intergeneric oncidium and immediately put it into s/h. So far, after about 2 months, it seems very happy. Not so much as one yellow leaf. I see no pleating (a major problem before) but perhaps it is too soon to tell. It seems reasonable that s/h would eliminate this. I'm curious to know what others have observed.

Leaf pleating has to do with moisture and I think S/H provides enough moisture to prevent it. I hear about lots of sucesses

I am moving my Odontocidium Wildcat 'Bobcat' AM/AOS into S/H specifically to prevent pleating, or that is my goal!

This is good to know. My Oncidium 'Sharry Baby' has pleated leaves, and is growing in bark mix. Thanks!

I potted it in a translucent pot with a dome and drainage holes on the bottom as well as side slits in hydroton and sat it in a small dish of water. The new shoot has gotten much bigger and put out roots, some that have gone right down to the bottom of the pot. I will take a photo tommorow, and yep no pleating I think. |
I still see pleating with some in s/h on occasion, but that seems to happen when the RH is too low.

Relative humidity is a problem in California. Without a greenhouse, I found I couldn't prevent pleating. Growing them over water trays, enclosing them in plastic tents, and various degrees of misting either was ineffectual or resulted in spotted leaves. They seem to like humidity at their roots and air circulation. Sounds like Hawaii to me. Since I'm not moving there, I just do s/h. Thanks to all for your input.

My first attempt with S/H was to solve the pleated leaf problem I'd been having continuously with one of my Onc. It was so bad, the pleats actually prevented a bloom spike from emerging! It has been about a month and a half, and it has a new growth about 3" long. It is the very first growth this plant has ever had without pleats! I'm sold.

I had the same problem with the spikes and the pleating. I increased the watering and it is gone. I keep it indoors so the humidity is low. Twice the water makes the difference.

My Sharry Baby is the happiest out of the whole bunch I planted into s/h. And there has been no pleating, like before.
