Hello New to Orchids, Have a question

Hi everyone,

I'm very new to Orchids. I think they're so beautiful and I would like to make sure that my plant doesn't die!

I just purchased this Orchid on Saturday and I have a question. Are these spots on the Orchid supposed to be there? I want to make sure it's healthy.

Welcome to OB!

I think your plant has botrytis. It just affects the flowers with those ugly spots and is not detrimental to the plant. Just try to keep the blooms form getting wet.

I agree, that is botrytis. I was told that if you hold the spike up with those butterfly type clips before it blooms you have a much better chance of not getting it. Some people like the spots.
Oh yeah Welcome to the OB.

Ok as long as the plant does not have a fungus! That's what I was more concerned with. I'm pretty sure it didn't have the spots on Saturday and I think they might have been misted at the store.

Oh bummer, I just googled botrytis. I guess it is a fungus!

Swamper 06-08-2010 04:49 PM

It's harmless to the plant.

Thank you so much for answering my question!

Botrytis cinerea is a fungus ;) But like mentioned before, it rarely ever is a problem for the plant itself. If you have other flowering orchids or flowering houseplants, I would keep this one separated from them to avoid spreading the fungus to other blooms.
