blue bloom
Hi eveyone,
A friend called me this morn. and said that he has a relative who is looking for an orchid that will have a bloom blue. From what I understood, it doesn't matter what type...the bluer the better. The only one I could think of is the blue vanda (couldn't remember it's exact name, though) but I'm sure there is another orchid out there whose bloom is that blue or bluer. I have no idea what her growing conditions are, so I told him that all I can do is find out from you what she would like to know then she'd have to go from there, as far as her conditions go. If you can help me (which I feel sure you can), I 'may' try to find a source for her....if' I'm in a good mood, that is. I would very much appreciate your help, Vicki |

Came across this last week at the orchid show at Tatton Park - Dendrobium victoriae reginae. I believe (but someone will correct me if I'm wrong) that it's cool growing, and can grow to over a meter, so not exactly compact. But definitely blue!

Dtps Kenneth Shubert is quite blue, so are some types of Phal violacea.
There's Vanda Pat Delight 'Dark Blue', Vanda Blue Magic Is he expecting true blue (which doesn't exist other than with artificial coloring), or the purples that orchid people call blue? Have a look at this old thread as well :http://www.orchidboard.com/community...ue-orchid.html |
Rhynchostylis coelestris

The Neostylis Lou Sneary is an especially good choice. Not hard to grow well, decent size (read: compact) plant, nice fragrance, blooms frequently, blah, blah, blah.... An excellent orchid all the way around. I would add some of the blue Lc. Mini Purple varieties as a good choice. Nice sized blooms for the small plant size, decent color, blooms more than once per year.

Camille
Thank you, Camille!
Yes, he tells me that his relative would like to find a 'true blue' orchid, but in the two yrs. that I've been growing, I haven't seen one...so I actually had a slight feeling there weren't any. He knows absolutely nothing about orchids, and I dont really know much...so that adds up to 'two rather clueless people'. I'm assuming that his relative is in our catergory, as well. I just thought I'd ask you experienced growers, so thanks very much for your help. Also, thank you for the link to the old thread. Vicki Quote:

Hi Duane,
As you can see, Camille has explained to me that there are no 'true blue' orchids, but I believe I'm still going to make a list of the ones each of you mentioned to me, so that the lady can just make up her mind as to which is blue enough to suit her. Thanks so much for your help! Vicki Quote:
