My standard Cymbidium will not open
I have around 10 plants each of a 2 culivated 30 year old cymbidium plants. One miniature and 1 standard. Right now the miniatures are blooming all over the house. One older plant has 10 stalks of blooms. The standard is the ones giving me trouble. They first started to set the bloom stalk in December and the will not open. They get alomst ready to open and then they start to die. I have them in all kinds of different normal light, feed them twice a month and water weekly. These standard started to do this about two years ago. Before that they would bloom just as nice as the miniatures. Any help I can get to get these plants to open their buds would be appreciated.

Hello and welcome to the Orchid Board.
Can you post pictures, they always help for problem identification. Also give some specifics on your growing techniques. Joann |
Hi Tomp,
If you are trying to bloom Cymbidiums in the house, Standard buds will blast almost every time. The Miniatures are more tolerant of warmer night time temps and will bloom more easily in the house environment. Check your records and discover what you did or were doing two years ago that you are not doing now. CL |
How warm are you keeping your standards?

I have noticed that my standards will not open properly if there is a temperature drop or a drop in humidity . Is your home air conditioned?
Also when last did you repot these plants ,are the root systems ok,tap the plants out of their pots and inspect the root systems. The root systems might be damaged and unable to take up nutrients . |

I have them in a heated basement with a temperature around 55 and in our living room with a temperature of 62 at night.
I will move the one upstairs back into the colder temperature. |
