Dendrobium atroviolaceum
Referred to as the "Black Blood-red Dendrobium", Dendrobium atroviolaceum is a lowland epiphyte native to Rossel Island, Papua New Guinea.
Typically, this species can grow to about 30cm, and have a many-flowering inflorescence to about 10cm tall. This 'Pygmy' form grows to 9cm tall, which is less than the length of a typical inflorescence :) It has been mentioned that this 'Pygmy' form of Den. atroviolaceum should be regarded as a separate species, but it probably hasn't gotten past the "talk" stage. Here's the pic of my little plant (I really need to get a better camera)... http://i80.photobucket.com/albums/j1...rchids2466.jpg -Pat |

Wow, what a beauty! Very nice healthy looking plant. What about the scent? I thought the picture was quite good, clear and shows the flower well. Please tell us more about your success with this orchid. And thanx for posting this.

What a great little plant. Just last week my friend bought one of these at the Phil. Flower Show. She is new to orchids and invited me over to repot and check out the roots. Anyway I noted the bulbs have a yellowish color compared to the darker green leaves. In your picture this also looks true, am I seeing that corrctly? Is this something that is NOT normal with this plant? The roots look great and I found another spike beginning to grow. Since I have no experience with this particular dendo. any direction to help my friend is appreciated.

What did you do special to get this orchid to bloom? I have one I bought in spike in January and the flowers are still beautiful. Hope I can bring about flowers next year.
