warm growing cymbidium
 

Hi ive been visiting several orchid shops and they are selling so many cymbidiums! im sure they came from the cooler side in my country! so i tried to shoo coz their so pretty knowing that if i bought them im sure they wont bloom if its in my place! my temperature is around 28 -37degrees, i have a direct morning sun which i dont see the burning effect on my orchids. Well im pretty picky about orchids i prefer orchids that would bloom all year round so i expect twice to thrice in a year. Anyone can share me some species that can tolerate warm temp and can bloom several times a year? thanks!

Cym. species which bloom more than once a year are rare to non-existent in my experience here in Northern California. That is the reason those of us who grow species have many different ones and therefore enjoy the longer period when the different ones come into bloom. Hybrids usually have a better potential of repeat blooming.

The species Cym. ensifolium, however, although it does not repeat bloom in my cool climate, is one parent of a hybrid that has a history of repeat blooming in warmer more humid zones. Cym. Golden Elf 'Sundust' (ensifoiium x Enid Haupt) can repeat bloom in Florida and, although not a species, may be a warm growing choice for you. Six to eight, charming, bright yellow, pleasantly scented flowers are held well on the inflorescence. Some Golden Elf hybrids may also have this re-blooming capability.

I've only got 1 warm growing cymbid now, since my dogs ate the other 5 :roll:
Anyways, its a ensifolium V. Tie Gu Su Xin. It blooms 4 times per year and beautifuly scented :D

As far as species are concerned, Cym. sinense, Cym. ensifolium, and Cym. kanran will do well in warm conditions, but must be heavily shaded and kept constantly moist at warmer temps. During colder weather, they can take full sun.

I stumbled upon this website of a nursery in Thailand. I fell in love with the cymbidiums they are selling. They can tolerate well in Bangkok climate so probably live well in other tropics also.

I would definitely put that nursery on my MUST VISIT list whenever I have the chance to visit Bangkok. Unfortunately being in tropics, we don't have much of large flower cymbs like those in subtropics.

hey frostedeyes!! sorry i didnt get to reply on your text messages, i was in ilocos and i left my phone in davao...i have a cymbidium pubescens and it grows well in our weather in davao...it likes to grow in coco coir with nutricote and small bits of charcoal
