B.C. Little Marmaid 'Janet"
 

Hi,
Am I posting to the wrong alliance? I don't really know how to tell the difference. Please let me know. Could someone explain to me how to tell which alliance a specific orchid is in, please?
Next question (:photo: attached). I have a B.C. Little Marmaid 'Janet' that I noticed has started leaning in it's pot since I repotted it from what I bought it in a few weeks ago (which was broken down bark). I thought I would repot it again and straighten it up, but 1st I wanted to see if it has started new roots while laying over.....and it has. Should I repot it in it's bark, or is this a good time to move it to S/H?

As long as you're orchids are showing good strong root growth - it can be repotted in your choice of media.
You're orchid belongs in the Cattelya alliance. I'm sure 1 of the mods will move it over :)

I just wanted to say thanks for your help and let you know that I plan to repot it tomorrow. I decided on S/H, so the PrimeAgra is soaking tonight.

BC stands for BrassoCattleya and it would be a part of the Cattleya alliance.

C. walkeriana X Bc. Maikai (B nodosa X C bowringiana)

Hi Vicki, Yep, I'd repot now since ther is new growth going on. Since it might be topheavy a pot clip will keep it secure. A good friend of mine who "loves" sharing with me likes to as she says "keep them in a tight pot and secure, pot clips and just enough room for a couple growths". I started doing the same and what a difference it makes. My chids are happy :D

Its great to see that you have some new root growth going on, I would personally take that plant out of its pot, soak it w/ KLN for like 15-20 minutes making sure the water is below the rhizome region to avoid rotting. I've also heard of adding one tablespoon of molasses to the soak when repotting as it is to induce future root growth.
Anyhow just cut of all the dead rotted growth- when I want to induce new roots and most of them are dead- I put it in moss, everyone has their own preference based on conditions and watering. have you done sh before? anyhow good luck :)

May I guess where you found this one. I don't normally grow a lot of cattleyas, but think I need this one because it carries my name!!

Please don't apologize for not seeing my thread.....I did the SAME thing. :blushing: Well, amost the same thing: I didn't realize until a few mins. ago that you and 3 other members had also replied to my question-post. :blushing:

Anyway, thanks for your help. I see that I have a LOT to learn about orchids and their culture (I seriously doubt that I'll be able to learn even the tip of the iceberg).....I'm trying to give it a shot, though. :D

You're right.....it was a tad top-heavy, but I believe I've got the PrimeAgra settled enough around the old, dead roots to anchor the orchid. (I hope it was ok to do that....I mean, use the old roots for "leavarage"??) I knew it was not good for the plant to be unstable.....I've understood that it's hard for the roots to "take hold" if they move around.....ant that made sense to me. Anyway, yes I sure wish I had some pot clips, but I never knew exactly what to order when I've placed orders for other things (size-wise, etc......plastic, clay...??). Now that you've told me that you and your friend have had good luck with keeping the plant "tight and secure", I'll sure keep that in mind next time I repot.

Thanks....Of course, I was very pleased to see new growth, too! I had already repotted my orchid before I read your reply to my question-post, but next time I DEFINITELY will soak it in KLN. Goodness knows, I end up with lots of rootless orchids, so your tip is really good to know! I hope I learn soon that it's best to buy orchids from a good and reputable vendor. There's not an orchid nursery around here, but my few online purchases to a couple of well known, and very good nurseries turned out gr8. I rec'd nice plants.

I haven't heard before that molasses can be used to promote root growth. Wow.....gr8 tip.....I'm gonna try that.
