darks spots on my cymbidium and shriveled bulb
 

Hi All,
I just received a cymbidium that my friend purchased online and had shipped to me from Hawaii. When it arrived yesterday one pseudobulb was a bit shriveled and has a horizontal white line across it. Above the line is lighter green and below is darker green. Then today I came home from work and it had dark spots all over it. The other pseudobulb is fine and leaves are fine. All of my other orchids are fine too (I had 4 nearby but I've removed the damaged one now). Is you have any advice, I'd really appreciate it. I've attached pictures. FYI, it doesn't live outside. I took it out to take better pictures.

I'd like to hear from someone about the black spot too! I have a zygo orchid that has getting worse and I have been treating with Physan 20 (1 t to a gal ) Hope to see some improvement how? black turns to brown is good? what is a sign of healing from black spots ? JD

Generally, I really monitor any dark spots. If they seem to be growing, I cut that part off. If you can get rid of the majority of the infection, then the fungicide/bactericide is just preventative.

That said, Cymbidiums are sensitive to water on the leaves, and can develop dark spots. That's ok. It's ugly, but not life threatening.

If you just got it, I would contact the grower/seller

This is a primary hybrid (canaliculatum x madidum).

I am surprised to hear you are growing this inside, Cyms do really well outside. They can also tolerate temps to just above freezing, although I wouldn't let it get quite that cold. The canaliculatum is warm growing, and both parents are from Australia.

Bulb shriveling could indicate root loss, and you might want to dig into the medium to check the roots on this. The type of spotting could be from fungus, but like cloudswinger said sometimes this can be from water sitting on the leaves. To cut down on the spots, you need good ventilation. Mine are outside, and I use the water hose on them, but the ventilation is good, and they dry fairly quickly. The water drying quickly on the leaves is a important.

This was a long stressful trip for this plant, and you should let the grower know what is going on with the plant, and perhaps just give it some time to acclimate. If it looks like it is getting worse, definitely contact the grower again immediately.

If you got it on Aug 7th, I would think this issue started before shipping. (Just my humble opinion, and I could be wrong)> LOL!! :o)
